After the Resurrection, 'beginning with Moses and the Prophets,' Jesus interpreted all the scriptures referring to his sufferings, and the hearts of his disciples 'burned within them' as he spoke. Subsequently, St. Paul told the Corinthian church that Christ died for their sins in accordance with the Scriptures, and was buried and rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. Comparing these two passages, clearly Christ and his disciples had the same method of interpreting the Old Testament, and Fr. John Behr is concerned with describing -actually, recovering-their hermeneutic. What precisely was Jesus' method of biblical interpretation? And, if our modern understanding of the Old Testament is not the same as that of the Apostles and the early church, is it possible this accounts for many of the problems in current theology? Fr. John shows that we can (and should!) read the Scriptures by the same light as the Apostles and the Fathers. If we let them teach us, he says, then 'we search the Scriptures to encounter Christ and thereby realize we are created for this encounter.' A genuine perspective of salvation history is restored to us, and we enter into the great mystery of life in death. 186 pp.
