A rendering of the full title accomplishes much of the work of description of this beautifully bound and printed tome: ''The Gospel Commentary, In Which Are Contained Lessons Taken from the Holy Gospel and from Many of the Divine Writings of Our Father Among the Saints, John Chrysostom, and Which Are Recited or Read by the Hierarch on Every Sunday, on Feasts of the Lord and on the Commemoration of the Saints, for the Instruction of the People Who Are Named after Christ.'' The Gospel Commentary is technically a service book which provides homilies on the Gospel readings according to the Orthodox lectionary. However, the formal assigning of these homilies to St. John Chrysostom is an honorific convention, reflecting his place in the Church's memory as the prince of preachers among the Fathers, and analogous to the attribution of the Divine Liturgy to him. Actually compilations or syntheses of many unnamed patristic and Byzantine commentators, this particular collection was probably the work of Patriarch Philotheus of Constantinople (1300-1377), an associate and champion of St. Gregory Palamas. The texts, in which the Gospel readings are magnified through centuries of organic reflection, breathe the same spirit of sobriety and piety as the services to which they belong. The book itself is clothed liturgically: burgundy leather-like cloth binding, gold stamping, two-color printing on rich cream stock. 855 pp.
