The book culture of medieval Russia is, in itself, an interesting study. Public worship required many service books (of rather large size) for priests, readers and choir directors, which could double as instruction and direction of the faithful. But additional books were needed that had no function in the concert of divine worship. These books were smaller, of compact layout to be carried by the pilgrim for edification -- to encourage perfection and union with God. In this present volume, the Izbornik of 1076 (translated from one of the most ancient, surviving Slavic manuscripts) is configured as a pocket book, consisting primarily of selections from the Church Fathers and monastics, while the Homilies of Grigorij the Philosopher (written specifically for a Russian audience) maintain a more definite structure and were historically used for both corporeal and personal meditation.
