The title is an indication of the direction of this magisterial study of art and iconography from the non-Chalcedonian and other Oriental Christian traditions-- it emphasizes the need to recognize that Eastern Christendom involves more that just the Byzantine and Russian traditions. Theological studies have been written about the Oriental Orthodox, but this is the first iconographic study we know of that concentrates on Egypt, Ethiopia, Syria, Persia and Armenia, showing that there existed a vision of divine beauty that transcended theological boundaries. So what we get here is more than simply another collection of icon reproductions (though they are present here-- brilliant reproductions of both icons and illuminated manuscripts that number nearly 300, 96 of them in full color). We are introduced to the history and spirituality of Christian communities that in most cases lived in the midst of larger cultures hostile to Christianity; communities shorn of political and cultural power, kept alive solely by faith and in the Liturgy. This is art history at its finest, elegant and informative. Large, deluxe format measures 9 x 12.

An Eighth Day View:

A breath-taking view of Middle Eastern Churches -- past and present. Many of these icons have never before been seen in print; most will appear new -- and unique -- as they differ in style from their Greek cousins.
