As H.A. Williams' opening quote from The Brothers Karamazov illustrates, oftimes God must help even our gladness along: ''Ah yes, I was missing that, and I don't want to miss it. I love that passage: it's Cana of Galilee, the first miracle. Ah, that miracle! Ah, that sweet miracle! It was not men's grief but their joy Christ visited. He worked His first miracle to help men's gladness.'' What concerns Williams here is joy's true locale, which is very near, in all things, in us. And this is no sort of pantheistic mantra. ''God can still be above and behind for all his being within,'' he writes, because ''it is in the grit of earth that we find the glory of heaven. It is in our being robustly human that God enables us to share his own divine life.'' Ah, paradox indeed. What ensues is a steady traipse through art and literature, theology, the saints, and our ideas about work, ecology and education with the intention of revealing that, no matter how the joy of God is awakened in us, our knowing of it must always be in terms of togetherness -- of ''entering into it, putting it on, realizing it.'' This communion remakes our lives day after day, a sacrament ''broken as it is into dozens of small, uneven bits and pieces... the very vehicle of His presence.'' good/good.
