Call it what you will: spirituality, the devout life, spiritual theology, mystical evolution, the theology of Christian perfection. We at Eighth Day have settled on The Spiritual Life for our catalog and website. It's a category of study (though much more than that, of course) diverse and deeply diversified by both controversy and synthesis. Treatises on the spiritual life are manifest in the writings of the Church Fathers but as a distinct branch of theological doctrine did not emerge until the eighteenth century, observes Dominican friar and distinguished Catholic theologian Jordan Aumann. His authoratative Spiritual Theology is a modern day classic on the subject, both remarkably coherent and practical in exposition and approach. Based squarely on the spiritual writings of St. Thomas Aquinas, St. John of the Cross, and St. Teresa of Avila (and in accord with the work of John G. Arintero and Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange), Spiritual Theology is of two distinct parts-doctrinal foundation and growth in practical holiness. The first third of the book surveys terminology, sources and schools of spiritual theology; the concept of sanctification; the roles and persons of Christ and Mary; the nature of Christian perfection and mystical experience; and the principles of the supernatual life, including grace, the virtues, and the indwelling Trinity. As substantial as all that sounds, the remaining two-thirds of the book carries the real punch. Fr. Aumann's approach to the practicalities of spiritual growth is straightfoward, almost definitive. He writes about the Sacraments, purification (of the senses, the passions, the intellect and the will), the virtues, kinds of prayer, temptation, discernment of spirits and aids to spiritual growth (including spiritual reading, friendship, spiritual direction, and confession). Undergirding his guidance throughout is the assurance that 'no two souls will follow the same path to perfection...grace does not destroy or replace nature; it works through and perfects nature.'
