This is a 'simple' writing, another of Newman's sharp but elegant replies to those who opposed Roman dogma and practice in his day. Simple, because in it Newman is not composing a systematic Mariology, but means only to 'put across some basic points of Catholic doctrine about Mary and devotion to her as the Mother of God.' To paraphrase the book's forward, there are certain questions Newman intends to put to his opponents. Mainly, does the professed Anglo-Catholic faithfulness to the Fathers' teaching about Mary as Theotokos ever flower into the Fathers' veneration for her? Establishing his answer, he then asks his opponents to consider that the great honor given Mary by the sundered Roman and Greek (we'll chalk up Newman's condescension here to ignorance) Churches shows this honor to be of the universal Faith, the normative practice of the Undivided Church. As with the other titles in this series edited by Jaki, the text is a critical edition, containing Newman's additions and revisions. 262 pp.
