Translated and introduced by Robert Charles Hill (who also translated Chrysostom's commentary on the Psalms), Theodoret of Cyrus's COMMENTARY ON THE LETTERS OF ST. PAUL was undertaken by this fifth century bisop of Cyrus (which he fondly called the 'little backwater') with full recognition of the 'world's luminaries' who had gone before him in the task. As he humbly puts it, he was content 'like some kine of mosquito, to buzz about the apostolic meadows along with those famous bees.' Yet Theodoret's commentary is both moderate and concise, keeping well in step with the tradition of his forebears, even disagreeing with them as he deems necessary. Theodoret demonstrates a remarkable affinity with the thought of St. Paul and only falters when his theological concerns overshadow the text, cauting him to see his positions as 'irreconcilable with those espoused by the divine apostle.' That said, we think he achieves his modest aim of 'demonstrating the profunding of the apostle's wisdom and stripping away the veils from his writing.'
