'The Synaxarion is like a great river whose rushing waters carry along mud, stone, branches and a little of everything they have met with on their way, regardless of its value, but whose stream is life-giving' (from the introduction). Hieromonk Makarios' gift to the Church, his great labor of purifying and sifting the 'mud, stone, pebbles, and branches' from the Synaxarion is now complete, making it possible for us to 'quench our thirst in its waters.' Makarios thus finds his place in the great chain of witness to the lives of the Saints, from the martyrologies of the earliest churches, the myriad medieval collections, the historic composition of St. Symeon Metaphrastes (10th c.), and the monumental edition of St. Nicodemus the of the Holy Mountain (18th c.). Makarios has based his work on that of St. Nicodemus, and Doukakis' later Great Synaxarion. Removing stilted and outdated rhetoric, he has extensively supplemented the entries when possible with additional historical material, adding a host of new entries on modern saints from all Orthodox traditions and on pre-schism Western saints. Makarios' introduction is a valuable contribution in itself, rendering a theological and textual account of the Synaxarion and its place in the life of the Church and in the devotional lives of Orthodox faithful. Rather than bare, historical accounts of saints' lives, the entries in the Synaxarion are verbal icons, as grace-bearing and instructive in holiness as visual ones. Volume 1, 550 pp.
