Archimandrite Zacharias, a member of the Monastery of St. John the Baptist in Essex, England is the spiritual son of Archimandrite Sophrony, and therefore spiritual grandson of St. Silouan the Athonite. From all reports this humble, unassuming monk is as remarkable as his spiritual forebears. One priest testified that ''one senses in him a man of profound spiritual attainment. The fragrance of holiness emanates from his childlike simplicity, radiant joy, and deep humility.'' Through his broken English he captivates, relating the teaching of Archimandrite Sophrony and St. Silouan concerning humility and the necessity for praying for all. His favorite image is that of an inverted pyramid: in the world, the powerful are at the top, dominating the many strata of people below them, but ''in Christ the pyramid was inverted so that all the weight of humanity's oppression fell on his shoulders.'' The saints are those who ''go down'' with Christ, identifying with His ''extreme humility'' to bear the world's sorrow. This book (more immediate and less academic than Sakharov's) makes Archimandrite Zacharias' place in a direct line of sanctity accessible to all of us, enabling us to join him in that succession if we so desire. 275 pp.
