Pieper maintains that philosophy proper has no basis in itself to address the question of the end of time, but reflects on what is given in ''theology'' (a pre-philosophical traditional interpretation). The West's theology is Christian, and has left a permanent stamp on its views of progress, development, and end; it cannot return to a Greek or oriental view of time as an endless cycle of repetition. Though imbued with Christian elements, modern philosophies have focused on the events within culture while ignoring the extra-temporal. It seeks laws of history and the power of prediction, while the Christian view acknowledges freedom, mystery, and ''prophecy.'' Secular philosophies end in either naive optimism or despairing pessimism; faith aids understanding and grounds hope. A discussion of the Christian and secular treatments of the Antichrist concludes this weighty little book.
