The comparison is striking, and maybe a little threatening to our Western minds -- Christ as seen and prophesied by the ancient Chinese Tao Teh Ching of Lao Tzu. Inspired by the life of Chinese scholar and Orthodox monk, Fr. Seraphim Rose, Hieromonk Damascene (who also wrote Fr. Seraphim's biography) cautions against reading this as religious syncretism (the belief that all paths possess equal truth), but rather as a revelatory proof of Christ as universal Truth. Just as many of the ancient Greek philosophers have been extolled for their desire of the Good and their belief in one God (which they termed the logos), so also Lao Tzu's Tao Teh Ching can be seen as a foreshadowing of the Incarnate Christ. Hieromonk Damascene goes about it something like this: Part One uses the Tao Teh Ching as basis for a series of nine enneads (or poems) to construct ''The Gospel According to Lao Tzu'' -- a representation of the intuitive vision of Lao Tzu himself; Part Two seeks to explain ''The Unfolding Revelation of the Tao in Human History''; and Part Three discusses the ways one can unite himself to the Incarnate Tao through watchfulness and prayer (rife with examples from the Orthodox tradition). You may still be skeptical. We admit we found it strange to read, ''in the beginning was the Tao, and the Tao was with God, and the Tao was God.'' But if Christ is the way, He is the seed of divine truth -- logos spermatikos -- in all things, and it is as St. Justin Martyr wrote: ''Whatever things were truly said among people belong to us Christians.''
