The timely reissue of this 1971 essay by Gilson, the esteemed French philosopher-historian, will disappoint anyone anticipating a defense of intelligent design or denunciations of scientism. Gilson delves deeper, recognizing that 'the issues that lie under the surface of the current evolution debate are ultimately far larger and more important,' to quote Cardinal Schönborn's introduction. Final causality lies at the center of Gilson's discussion. Although it has been wrapped up in arguments for the existence of God since Plato, final causality is not merely a religious question. Gilson argues that, far from dismissing teleological concerns, the rationalism of science in fact demands them. To prove his point, he probes Aristotle's observations of nature, which revealed 'teleology so evident.that [Aristotle] asked himself how his predecessors had been able to avoid seeing it, or still worse, had denied its presence.' After a survey of the mechanistic objections to final causality raised by Descartes and Bacon, Gilson arrives at Darwin, who remained curiously silent on many contested points. The dense, but exhilarating, final chapter suggests that the modern view of final causality does not differ from what it was in the time of Aristotle-'unable to say in what it consists, science prefers to ignore or deny it.' 241 pp.
